Dr. Anja Pabel
Associate Editor, Tourism in Marine Environments
I am a Senior Lecturer and the Academic Lead – Postgraduate Studies at CQ University Australia. I hold a Bachelor of Business with First Class Honours and a PhD in Tourism, both awarded by James Cook University, with my doctoral research examining the role of humour in enhancing tourist experiences. My research expertise spans tourist behaviour, humour in tourism, sustainable and marine tourism, and the student experience in higher education. I have co‑authored four scholarly books and published more than 50 peer‑reviewed publications.
One of the books, co-edited with Prof Bruce Prideaux, is titled “Coral Reefs: Tourism, Conservation and Management.” The book examines coral reef systems through management, conservation, and tourism perspectives. Working on this project provided me with valuable insights into the diverse challenges currently facing coral reef destinations worldwide. I feel very fortunate to have collaborated with the contributing authors. The book addresses key issues such as climate change, pollution threats, marine wildlife interactions, coral reef restoration, governance, sustainability, conservation, and community resilience.
In my free time, I am happiest on or in the water, whether I’m scuba diving, snorkelling, or stand-up paddle boarding. Being in the ocean brings me a profound sense of peace and connection that I deeply cherish.
