Dr. Brooke A Porter

Dr. Brooke A. Porter is a social scientist, marine conservationist and knowledge management specialist whose career spans academia, international development and environmental conservation across multiple continents. Her doctoral research focused on the potential of surf tourism as a supplemental livelihood for remote fisheries-based communities in the Philippines — work that positioned her at the intersection of coastal development, marine resource management and community resilience.
Dr. Porter currently works with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization as an instructional designer, developing content that supports environmental management strategies in lesser-developed regions. Her applied work reflects a career-long commitment to translating research into practical tools and strategies that serve vulnerable communities, particularly those dependent on aquatic resources for their livelihoods.
Her research interests are broad and interdisciplinary, encompassing aquatic anthropology, marine conservation, marine tourism, social entrepreneurship and gender in fieldwork.
Dr. Porter has held academic positions including Professor of Environmental Studies at the Umbra Institute in Italy and a visiting scholar at Harz University and Wakayama University. She has also contributed to co-edited volumes on gender in tourism research, most notably as co-editor of Femininities in the Field, which examined the role of gender and personal identity in social science fieldwork across diverse cultural contexts.
Throughout her career, Dr. Porter has worked with NGOs, international aid agencies and educational institutions around the world, bringing a grounded and culturally sensitive perspective to complex challenges at the nexus of conservation, development and community wellbeing.
